VA State Inspection

VA State Inspection sign in Chesapeake, VA

State Inspection Services in Southeastern Virginia

Tune Up Plus is authorized to perform state inspections in Virginia.

Most vehicles registered in Virginia are required to pass the state inspection annually. The best way to keep your vehicle compliant is to pay attention to its renewal month, which can be seen on the sticker displayed on the windshield. You have until the last day of that month to pass the state safety inspection.

Note: emissions inspections are only required in certain counties or cities as part of the state inspection.

We serve the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

When is a VA Vehicle Inspection Required?

New Vehicles Purchased in Virginia: When a new vehicle is sold to you, it should already have passed its first state inspection. Many dealerships will affix the sticker to the window, which is what the state police recommend. Make sure to check that the sticker is on the windshield before you leave to avoid police stops. The sticker will tell you the month that your vehicle's next inspection is due.

New Residents of Virginia: It is recommended that you have your vehicle(s) undergo the state inspection in Virginia before registration. This is because there is no grace period. Upon registering vehicles in Virginia, they must be inspected immediately. Because vehicles don't need to be registered in Virginia to undergo the Virginia state inspection, you may have them inspected first and then register them.

Currently Registered & Inspected Vehicles: State inspections are required within 12 months of the last inspection month. You can reference the windshield sticker you obtained upon passing the state inspection last time.

Staying on top of your inspection schedule is key to avoiding fines and enjoying an uninterrupted driving experience. For more information, check out the Virginia State Inspection FAQ provided by the Virginia State Police. Note that inspection requirements are subject to change. For the latest information, check with the Virginia DMV.
